Difference between ERG and simulation

Trainer and modes

ERG and simulation are different ways of controlling the trainer. ERG tries to maintain a target power; simulation changes resistance according to gradient, speed, or other parameters.

Recommended steps

  • Use ERG for structured power-based workouts.
  • Use simulation when you want a feeling closer to a route or race.
  • In ERG, you maintain cadence and the trainer adjusts resistance.
  • In simulation, you manage the effort as if there were terrain.
  • If you are doing power intervals, ERG is usually more comfortable.
