What the ideal cadence is

Basic concepts

There is no single perfect cadence. It depends on the effort, terrain, gearing, trainer, and rider habit.

Recommended steps

  • Look for a comfortable and sustainable cadence.
  • In ERG, avoid dropping too low so you do not get stuck.
  • During intense efforts, a slightly higher cadence often helps.
  • Do not suddenly change technique just to chase a number.
  • Observe which cadence lets you produce power without excessive tension.
  • If there is discomfort, review position and load.
